Despite having a fairly independent history, the Manx language is no longer spoken as a first language although there are now some attempts at revival.
Surnames retain some signs of their Celtic origin with remnants of 'Mac' in those beginning with 'C', 'K' and 'Q'. Resemblance to Irish and Scottish Gaelic is pronounced.
